Trust your varicose vein treatment to vascular specialists

“Before my procedure, I felt as if I was dragging around a 100-pound wooden leg, but afterward I could have gone dancing!”

Large, bulging varicose veins are unsightly and may cause painful symptoms such as bruising, throbbing, tiredness or heaviness in the legs, and may affect quality of life if left untreated. Symptoms can worsen over time and in severe cases, can lead to swollen ankles, skin discoloration and ulcerations.

Varicose veins can be treated to prevent them from getting worse. There are minimally invasive treatment options to bring symptomatic relief, improve appearance, and prevent further progression and complications.

At Vascular Specialists of the North Shore, our interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons have a deep understanding of vein problems and are highly trained in treating venous insufficiency leading to complicated varicose veins.

Vascular care has evolved. It’s about choices.

People living with vascular conditions don’t want overnight stays in the hospital, lengthy recovery periods and scheduling issues. They want to return to their daily lives quickly. We deliver a different healthcare experience; one that is invested in people, communication and best-in-class care.

At Vascular Specialists of the North Shore, we are committed to superior service and delivering far more. Our patients can expect:

Varicose Veins Treatment

Varicose veins are chronic and recurrent conditions. The variety of treatments available does not offer a cure, but rather a control of the condition. Successfully treated veins cannot come back. However, your inborn tendency to develop new veins will not be cured by this or any other form of treatment. Dr. Michael Mastromatteo treats venous insufficiency completely, removing all backward-flowing veins, making your treatment for varicose veins as thorough as possible.

"When my leg started to become very painful during my long commutes to and from work, I made an appointment with my doctor. She referred me to the Vein Specialists of the North Shore. My experience with the Vein Specialists was a completely positive one from start to finish! The office is clean and the atmosphere is very pleasant. The staff was kind and friendly at each one of my appointments. On the day of my procedure I was a little anxious, not knowing exactly what to expect. The staff made sure I was comfortable, and they took the time to chat with me and put me at ease. Dr. Mastromatteo did the same, and before I knew it the procedure was over! I barely felt any discomfort during the surgery, and was surprised (and very glad) to find that I was not in any pain afterward. I was moving around much better than I had anticipated for the rest of the day. I couldn't believe it! Now my commute is pain-free, and my leg looks better, too! I would definitely recommend the Vein Specialists of the North Shore to anyone! A sincere thanks to the front desk, ultrasound, the entire staff and Dr. Mastromatteo. You made an experience that was seemingly complicated very ease and pain-free! I couldn't be more pleased with the results - Thank you all!"

"For 28 years I put off having my vein even looked at! I came to the realization my need of help was greater than the fear I was imagining & made an appointment with Dr. Michael Mastromatteo. He patiently explained what would need to be done and set my mind at ease. The day of the surgery came. I had my procedure and my fears were quite unfounded - there was really no pain - just mild discomfort and after a few hours I was able to go home. With the support of the staff, I was able to work through some minor problems. Their support went above and beyond my expectations & experiences. The office has a valuable asset in him. My follow up with Dr. Mastromatteo also made my decision justified - I would most certainly recommend The Vein Specialists to anyone who needs such care. Thank you all."

"Before my procedure, I felt as if I was dragging around a 100 pound wooden leg, but afterwards I could have gone dancing! My surgery has given me a new lease on life-I can once again enjoy walking the dog and many other activities I had been avoiding. The psychological uplift has been as important as the relief of the physical symptoms. For this, I am forever grateful to the wonderful people at the Vein Specialists of the North Shore. The actual surgery and the recuperation period were easy and involved minimal discomfort. All of the staff were professional, courteous, friendly, and answered all my questions clearly and thoroughly. Many, many thanks to Dr. Neuman and everyone who helped make my experience at Vein Specialists of the North Shore a very positive one."

"I had a REALLY ugly clump of raised spider veins on the side of my knee that looked like a horrible bruise. They never bothered me, but friends kept asking me what I did to my leg! It was embarrassing. I met Dr. James Bass at the Vein Specialists and he very patiently took the time to explain all of my options. He recommended Laser treatment - who knew THAT was available? I'm a bit of a skeptic, but trusted his judgement. I am SO glad I did. The difference is REMARKABLE. I never realized how bad it looked until I saw my BEFORE & AFTER photos. I'm a believer now, and can't wait to have the rest of my legs treated! Dr. Bass is wonderful and I would recommend him to anyone considering spider vein treatment."

"2 years ago, I had vein procedures done on both of my legs. I came to Dr. Mastromatteo because my legs felt heavy and tired too easily for someone who worked out 1 hour every single day and lived a very active 40 year old life (5 foot 6 inches, 115 pounds). My legs and my feet itched and burned and tingled (pins and needles) when I stood, walked, ran, sat, and slept. I experienced painful and random pulsing and fluttering in both legs. Dr. Mastromatteo confirmed, with a physical exam and ultrasound by his technician, that I had superficial venous reflux disease. However, my veins were very small. I did not have the very large bulging blue veins that many people do. You could see the affected veins, but they were not very pronounced. Then, I received the news that my insurance would not cover my procedures to correct my issues because they deemed my veins too small. My carrier, and my particular policy, has VERY specific requirements that need to be met. Dr. Mastromatteo, his office manager, and I worked hard to plead my case to my insurance, but they would not cover me. So, I went ahead with the surgeries anyway with a much appreciated financial arrangement with the office. After both procedures, I felt relief from my symptoms. 2 years later, I am still symptom free. Furthermore, even though my veins were small and not terribly aesthetically unpleasing to me, my legs now look much more attractive. I have less blue veins and fewer spider veins. And I feel great. I highly recommend Dr. Mastromatteo. I had a terrific experience with all the kind and professional people in the office. Everyone went out of their way to help me, even when my insurance company would not."

"I inherited varicose veins from my mother.  In 2005, I had surgery on them that did not work and was repeated.  The second surgery provided some relief, but discomfort soon reappeared.  In 2010, I had an ulcer treated at the wound center.  This year, the pain was severe enough for me to take action.   Dr. Balcom has good ratings and because of the negative experience I had with my previous doctor, I decided to go to the Vein Specialists of the North Shore for a consultation.  I am glad I did.  I have only positive things to say.  Dr. Balcom was professional, answered my questions, and has a good bedside manner: telling me what he was doing.  I was surprised that the pain was much less than I experienced during my previous procedures.  He obviously is very highly skilled.  The entire staff was friendly, supportive, and willing to answer my questions. They are friendly, supportive, and caring.  We shared personal stories and it feels like they will now be friends.  I wish all the doctors' offices provided the care and concern that Dr. Balcom and his staff does.  In a healthcare system that increasingly seems to be run by regulators, finding this office that is filled with compassion for the patient is truly a gift."
